Job Summary: The Pipefitter is responsible for installing, assembling, fabricating, maintaining, and repairing piping systems in accordance with blueprints, specifications, and industry standards. This role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and adherence to safety protocols. The ideal candidate will have strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Responsibilities/Job Duties:
- Plans, prepares, installs, and maintains piping and plumbing systems composed of various materials. Systems may include pipes, pressure and vacuum gauges, pipeline filters, steam traps, and strainer valves.
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine layout and installation procedures.
- Measure, cut, thread, and bend pipe to required angles using hand and power tools.
- Gathers necessary equipment and materials for each job.
- Welds, cuts, bends, threads, solders, and fits pipes to specifications.
- Attaches pipes and piping systems to walls using brackets, bracket systems, or clamps; cuts or bores holes as needed prior to installation.
- Installs various types of insulation and pipe coverings; safely removes and properly discards old coverings in accordance with hazardous waste procedures and EPA/OSHA requirements.
- Inspects piping systems, tests for pressure and leaks, and reports or resolves issues.
- Coordinates with manager to schedule machinery maintenance, repairs, and installations to minimize disruption to operations.
- Collaborates effectively with team members, contractors, and other trades to ensure smooth workflow and timely completion of projects.
- Communicates clearly and professionally with supervisors and colleagues regarding project status, issues, and safety concerns.
- Maintains accurate records, including safety logs and inspection details.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Ability to read schematics and blueprints.
- Ability to use a variety of tools, which may include blowtorches, saws, pipe benders, and welding torches.
- Strong understanding of safety procedures and regulations.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Must be able to successfully pass a 1G TIG/MIG test.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Successful completion of a four-year apprenticeship that included classroom and on-the-job instruction in pipefitting or equivalent experience demonstrating proficiency in pipefitting practices and technical knowledge.
Physical Requirements:
- Exposure to loud noises, extreme temperatures, and hazardous materials.
- Requires use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- May involve working overtime depending on project needs.
- Prolonged periods of standing and stretching to install and repair pipes and pipe fittings.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
- Must possess visual acuity required to inspect piping systems and read plans or blueprints.
